South African National Parks (SANParks) Biodiversity Social projects (BSP) programme has three main objectives - namely, poverty relief, community upliftment and nature-conservation on SANParks protected areas, buffer zones and controlled areas. BSP aims to empower people through nature conservation initiatives and is funded by the Environmental programmes of the Department of Environmental Affairs.
BSP encourages entrepreneurship and is made up of teams in alignment with the “Working for/on ….” Programmes, mentioned below. The BSP teams primarily work on projects on SANParks land. The teams comprise members of local communities who are working towards becoming independent contractors or already have their own contracting businesses, in the fields in which they have been trained. These projects are informed
by the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). In K2C we have two active programmes falling under the BSP Programme. These include:
