In this interview, K2C COO Marie-Tinka Uys and Senior Program Manager, Nick Theron discuss K2C’s origins and UNESCO Biosphere designation, which recognizes regions that balance biodiversity conservation with sustainable development. They explain the structure of biosphere regions, consisting of core protected areas, buffer zones, and transition zones where people live and work. They highlight the importance of securing critical ecosystems, such as water catchments and wildlife corridors, while actively involving local communities.

The discussion also touches on South Africa’s ten biosphere reserves, the role of conservation in supporting livelihoods, and innovative initiatives like carbon credit-funded clean cookstoves and sustainable agriculture. Collaboration among private landowners, communities, and government entities is emphasized as key to long-term conservation success.

Additionally, the interview explores the legal mechanisms for declaring protected areas and how landowners contribute to the national 30 by 30 conservation targets.
