Hope Morema, K2C’s Community Engagement and Learning Officer spoke to HFM Stream’s Llewell Viljoen, about the Sand River Clean-Up Campaign, a collaborative effort to restore one of Bushbuckridge’s most vital waterways.

Hope shared how the initiative, in partnership with SAVE The Sand, Bushbuckridge Local Municipality and local recyclers, addressed illegal dumping hotspots along the river while inspiring community-driven environmental stewardship. Through teamwork and citizen science tools, the campaign removed large quantities of waste, restored parts of the riverbank and encouraged residents to take pride in protecting their shared natural resources.

“We need to remind ourselves that these natural resources are ours, before thinking about where the river flows, we must understand how its health directly affects us.” – Hope Morema

Beyond a one-day clean-up, the project laid the foundation for ongoing education, school-based environmental learning and community monitoring, laying the foundations for conservation to be adopted as a daily practice.

Thank you to HFM Stream for giving K2C this platform to share our story!
