In response to the January flooding, SANParks coordinated an immediate flood relief programme from 18 January to 14 February 2026, first to support affected camps and staff, and then to assist communities impacted by the rising waters.
Through the generosity of multiple donors and coordinated logistics by SANParks, relief reached both internally affected sections and surrounding villages. A total of 1 252 food parcels, 310 hygiene packs, 600 blankets, significant volumes of drinking water, staple foods and essential supplies were distributed to communities along the Park’s western boundary during this period.
K2C worked alongside our Landscape partners to support distribution into several villages within the Biosphere region. In times of crisis, it is our responsibility to do what we can, where we can, to support the communities of this landscape.
K2C’s TASC Team distributed parcels to 163 households across seven villages. Engagements were held with Kings, Indunas and traditional councils prior to distribution, communicating that the parcels were donated by SANParks and partners, and ensuring that support reached households most affected by the floods.
Many community members expressed how the parcels would immediately strengthen household meals, particularly for children. Elders shared messages of appreciation and offered prayers and blessings, asking that their gratitude be conveyed back to those who had given. In several villages, the distributions ended with songs of thanks – a reflection of the strong sense of community that carries people through difficult times.
Our role was simple – to assist with coordination and delivery where needed, and to stand with the people of our landscape in a difficult season. Floodwaters recede, but recovery takes longer. At K2C, we remain committed to working in partnership, listening carefully, and supporting practical responses that strengthen resilience across our landscape.
