New research partnership with the University of Limpopo strengthens environmental knowledge in the K2C Biosphere Region

Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Region (K2C) is in the process of formalising an exciting new collaboration with the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Limpopo through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Once finalised, the agreement will set the foundation for a long-term partnership focused on applied environmental research, student training, and practical solutions to local sustainability challenges.
The collaboration will support postgraduate and senior undergraduate research that builds on existing monitoring and community engagement work within the K2C Biosphere Region. By linking academic research with real-world environmental management, the partnership aims to strengthen knowledge production while directly contributing to improved river health, waste management, and community wellbeing. The partnership also aims to support collaboration with the community and facilitate the co-creation of sustainable strategies related to waste management.
The MoU focuses on several shared priorities, including river monitoring, freshwater ecosystem health, water quality assessment, and the growing challenge of waste leakage into rivers and streams. These themes are particularly relevant in a region where many communities rely on rivers for domestic use, agriculture, and ecosystem services.
Research will take place in selected catchments and communities within the biosphere region, with preference given to areas where monitoring data already exists and where environmental pressures such as waste pollution are evident. This approach allows researchers to combine new fieldwork with existing datasets, creating stronger and more meaningful long-term analyses of environmental change.
Several student research projects are already being developed under this collaboration. These projects span multiple levels of study, from doctoral to fourth-year undergraduate research, reflecting a strong commitment to building the next generation of environmental scientists.
One doctoral project will examine the impact of informal waste disposal on surface water systems in the Bushbuckridge area. The study will combine ecotoxicology, biological monitoring and citizen science approaches to better understand how waste affects aquatic ecosystems and human health. The project also explores how community-based monitoring can strengthen environmental awareness and stewardship.
Two master’s level studies will focus on the relationship between waste pollution, water quality, and river ecosystem health. One project will assess how solid waste influences water chemistry and macroinvertebrate communities in the Moetladimo River, while another will investigate how local institutions, governance systems, and community practices influence waste management behaviour in Bushbuckridge.
At the same time, several honours and fourth-year projects will focus on assessing the ecological condition of rivers within the region. Using field-based monitoring data and multi-metric assessment methods, students will evaluate the health of rivers such as the Klaserie, Kubjaname and Moetladimo. These studies will contribute valuable information on river ecosystem condition and help strengthen long-term monitoring efforts in the region.
Importantly, the collaboration emphasises ethical and community-engaged research. Students will work in areas where K2C already has relationships with municipalities, community organisations, and local stakeholders. Students will also apply for ethical clearance from the University’s Turfloop Research and Ethics Committee. This ensures that research activities are conducted respectfully and that findings are shared in accessible ways with the communities involved.
The partnership also opens opportunities for practical learning. Students may participate in field monitoring, community engagement activities, and knowledge exchange workshops as part of their training. In turn, K2C benefits from new research insights that can inform environmental management, policy discussions, and on-the-ground interventions.
By working together, the Department and K2C aim to ensure that academic research contributes directly to environmental solutions. The collaboration also supports the broader goal of protecting landscapes and water resources within the biosphere region, including areas linked to South Africa’s Strategic Water Source Areas, which play an important role in securing water for downstream communities and ecosystems.
As the first group of projects begins, the partnership marks an encouraging step toward deeper collaboration, stronger knowledge sharing, and practical environmental solutions rooted in local landscapes and communities.
